The short answer: choose the lightest box that still protects your product on its worst journey. A box that is too weak causes damage and returns. A box that is too strong wastes money on every piece you order.
The three options at a glance
| Type | Build | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 3-ply (single wall) | Two flat liners with one fluted layer between them | Light products, short local deliveries, mailer and e-commerce boxes |
| 5-ply (double wall) | Three liners with two fluted layers | Heavier or fragile products, courier shipping, stacking in a warehouse |
| 7-ply (triple wall) | Four liners with three fluted layers | Very heavy goods, machinery parts, long-distance and export loads |
How to decide
- Weight of the product: the heavier it is, the more plies you need.
- How far it travels: more handling and more transfers mean a stronger box.
- Stacking: boxes at the bottom of a pile carry the load of everything above.
- Fragility: glass, electronics and liquids usually justify 5-ply.
- Budget: each extra ply adds paper, so it adds cost. Test before you upgrade.
Paper strength also matters
Two boxes with the same number of plies can perform very differently depending on the paper weight (GSM) used for the liners and the flute. If you are unsure, send us your product weight and shipping method and we will suggest the right build.
